Hearing new artists and new sounds is what we, dance music lovers, live for. So, lo and behold my enthusiasm when Oxy Beat’s new EP titled “Vibraciones” founds its way into my inbox. Oxy Beat is a Argentinian DJ, producer and remixer. He started his musical career in 2012 and since then has been working with several labels and artists pushing his unique sounds. One of his newer EPs, Vibraciones, released on Kassette Music, a brand new label started in 2014, pays tribute to both his and Kassette Music’s deep, dark, tech house and techno stylings—perfect for those nights you feel like dancing in the corner of an abandoned warehouse until 9 a.m.
The EP opens with Vibraciones, a sadistic track, whose bass line will have you grooving and bouncing from the get go. The breakdown at 3:10 allows the listener a chance to open their eyes and bask in their surroundings before forcing them closed and hypnotizing the listener, once again. The quiet, detailed synthetic sounds in the background pull the listener in and keep a firm hold on their conscious. I am reminded of watching Paranormal Activity when listening to this track because, paying attention to everything you can, makes the movie, and likewise, this track, so much better.
The second track is called All Night. The high-hat provides a definitive, tech house-like bounce, making the track a bit more upbeat than Vibraciones. However, this is juxtaposed by the breakdown and heavily techno influenced second verse after 2:35. The sounds used in this track are definitely unique. A sound that I can only describe as a quiet cricket adds depth to the first verse; A Caribbean-like drum takes center stage during the first breakdown and the second verse is punctuated by a couple of intricate psychedelic synths serve as an added means to create depth and character.
The final track in the EP is Abstracto. The opening is certainly the most detailed out of the three with several different sounds working together. The bass line settles down and takes prominence at around the 1:03 mark. The shaker styled synth in the background clearly defines each 8 beat section allowing the listener a basis for which to sync up their dance moves. Slowly, various sounds are added in creating a harmonious dystonic effect for the listener. These sounds then characterize the main structure of the song in the following bars until the song reaches its energetic peak at the 4:40 mark. Finally, as with many dance music tracks, layers are removed as the song reaches it’s inevitable end, with the bass line serving as your only solace.
All in all, this is a fantastic EP and one that surely will garner more attention. If you like deep, dark techno and tech house, pay close attention to Oxy Beat, as he will, as his name states, bring the beats.
