TRACK REVIEW: deadmau5′ Entschuldigen Sie by Jeet Ghoshal

This week, I’m reviewing a track that wasn’t necessarily released, but was posted online. This track speaks to the artist’s versatility and talent as it is embodies a form of music that would, by many standards, be considered unusual. I am, of course, referring to Entschuldigen Sie by deadmau5. Entschuldigen Sie is German for ‘excuse me’ and was composed during a time when deadmau5 was experimenting with different forms of music—letting his inner artist, full of creativity, out. Entschuldigen Sie was uploaded to deadmau5’s SoundCloud around the same time the early musings of Colecanth were uploaded.

Entschuldigen Sie differs from deadmau5’s ‘normal’ (I use that term loosely as his musical arsenal is board and all encompassing) Progressive House. It’s an ambient track—relaxing and soothing, slow, soft and melodic. Although you can use these adjectives to describe Progressive House, or almost any genre for that matter, it most accurately describes most ambient music. The track exemplifies and pushes the definition of music; as it brings together discordant sounds yielding a masterful production. The sounds used are not familiar, the rhythm is unusual and off tempo, but the product is excellent.

If you know anything about deadmau5 by following him on his various social media avenues, you’ll know that he has a bit of an attitude. Sarcastic, snide comments, taking jabs and people, the industry and anything and everything in between is his bread and butter. It’s great marketing. It really gets people talking. But, during the time when Entschuldigen Sie was released, deadmau5 seemed to be going through a time of self-review. As an apology to his fans and those close to him, he uploaded a plethora of tracks that differed from his norm, but very well received by everyone. Although we can empathize with dance music phenom, I think there are a large number of fans out there that welcome the new flavour of music. We can only look to his newer productions to see if this emotion will carry forward throughout his work.
