REVIEW: Shogun, Mark Sherry & Carlo Lio Boat Cruise: 1st FLOOR aboard the Stella Borealis by Sabino Furlone

A Review of the FIRST FLOOR aboard the Stella Borealis, with Carlo Lio and Casualties of Sound.

I still haven’t had a chance to pick my jaw off the floor, simply put.

Envy Productions really pulled up their socks and set the bar high to organize one of the most memorable boat cruises that EDM fans in Toronto will see this summer. This party will be talked about for a while to come, simply because of the massive talent that was quickly pooled together after a major setback of Orjan Nilsen announcing his performance cancellation. But really, who can really complain with a massive line up like this? What a great way to start off the summer!

I spent most of my time on the lower deck of the Stella Borealis, where local talent Casualties of Sound ensured everyone’s feet were moving on the front deck before this pirate ship set sail. Delivering nothing but goods, I expected nothing less from Ron Gourlay and Alan DeGuzman keeping the party funky and bopping to the lighter styles of tech house. As the crowd dispersed throughout the boat when access to the second level had opened, things started to sound a bit darker from the duo satisfying the tastes of those who stayed hungry for their specialty dish.

Upon departure from the dock, the Casualties of Sound were serving fresh tracks from Inmotion Music including Sodobah Le Photographe by Ron Costa, and a big release from Prospect Records, Matthew FreedzDrampkring. Keeping it cool and effortlessly producing more than satisfying drops to keep their crowd from leaving, time flew by as the duo flawlessly edited and mixed tech massive after tech favourite. Then the man himself finally came out to play – Mr. Carlo Lio!

Friends and fans alike couldn’t get enough of the feel-good tunes the Casualties had been mixing, and Carlo playfully kept the vibe going by keeping the party moving by playing along the similar mixing style as the Casualties of Sound! That was quite a treat to see and rather refreshing to hear Lio accommodate both fans of his and Casualties. Before Lio had switched over to his trademark sound, he was mixing in crowd pleasers such as Potobolo RecordsSeevers by Ron Costa, and his own remix of Do It by Clio from Metroline Limited.

After a couple hours of hard hitters and funky beats alike from the man himself, Casualties of Sound took over the decks once again to play for the fans as the boat made its return back to the shore. Switching it up a little bit, picking up where Lio had left off I heard a little bit of everything coming from COS.

“I can’t believe things worked out the way they did today, being told this morning that we were going to open and close for someone we look up to as an artist.” As a fellow performing musician I can totally relate to Ron when he told me how big of a day it was for the both of them. “Lio is one of many reasons why we do what we do, and it was a huge honour to have the chance to play for him. We’re also so proud to be part of a team that is dedicated to put on a great show, no matter what the situation!” I can 100% support that statement as a fan of their music and as a friend of COS. I was totally blown away with the last minute artists Envy had managed to get for one hell of a comeback. Great House downstairs, and great Trance upstairs, it was an all around awesome party. A cruise for the books, an afternoon to remember, for all of summer.
