Trance fans, mark your calendars. If you haven’t already heard, Gatecrasher, the international clubbing brand that has influenced the party scene across the world, is finally touching down in Toronto! Taking place at Sound Academy on Friday, November 9, 2012, Gatecrasher will be bringing 7 international trance acts, 5 of which have never been to Toronto, into our EDM scene. For one night only Sound Academy will be open until 8am, allowing each artist 90 minutes of play time on the decks. But that’s not all – a second room will be open with Toronto-based DJs, Mr. Morton and Stevic spinning until 3am with a surprise appearance by one of the main acts at some point in the night. As if it couldn’t get any better, this event will be broadcasted live on After Hours FM (www.ah.fm). Using the official event hashtag, #GatecrasherTO, the rest of the world can listen in while tweeting and partying alongside the Toronto trance family.

This will be the first-ever Gatecrasher event in North America and we have Jerome Joseph of Trance Nation to thank for that. Discussions of bringing Gatecrasher to this side of the world began over a year ago when Joseph decided it was time bring something new to the city – it was time to showcase international talent that has largely been ignored by the Toronto EDM industry. So who exactly can we expect to see? Check out this trance-filled lineup:

Solarstone (UK)
Daniel Kandi (Denmark)
Tenishia (Malta)
Protoculture (South Africa)
First State (Netherlands)
Tomas Heredia (Argentina)
Chris Schwiezer (Argentina)

And Ontario’s very own…
Mr. Morton (Toronto)
Stevic (Kitchener-Waterloo)

Joseph is expecting to attract an audience of true trance fans – those who can look past the DJ polls and popular charts and simply enjoy the sound and the feeling of genuine uplifting trance. He warns his audience that a Gatecrasher party might not be like the typical EDM events we see today. Joseph hopes to bring the PLUR mantra of Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect back into the Toronto scene. What does that mean? He talks of a culture that used to exist but has seemed to have faded in our city. A culture where people went to events to make friends, enjoy the music and have an overall great experience. There were fewer expectations on venues, DJs, and music, and more interest in living and breathing the PLUR vibe – true “rave” culture. With a new generation of ravers in the city, it will be interesting to see the dynamic of this Gatecrasher event. In Joseph’s opinion, this younger generation hasn’t really grasped the essence of uplifting trance. What we now call Electronic Dance Music (EDM) is very different from the sounds of the 90’s when PLUR rave culture was booming. We all know that with new music comes new attitudes and new culture. Will the PLUR vibe that Joseph is hoping for be achieved on November 9th? Only time will tell.

Regardless of the outcome, Joseph is just happy to be giving Toronto exposure to an international brand like Gatecrasher, and vice versa. With three clubs in the UK and massive events around the world, Gatecrasher has been around for almost 20 years as a key influencer in party culture. The artists are talented and the parties are euphoric – it’s about time Toronto got a piece of that action!
