The Crosstown Rebels story is one of cosmic magnitude. More than a record label, it has grown to encompass a growing group of admired musical misfits, a TV series, a mystical festival, and a philosophy for a collective of free spirits. A pinnacle of ever-evolving quality, consistently reinventing the current landscape of music and touching souls around the globe with fresh iconic records and mind tripping, off-the-grid events, they are driven by a defining tight-knit global family. The dedicated crew of Rebels are caught in a worldly and unrelenting pursuit of fun and alternative ways of setting fire to their passions.
As Crosstown Rebels enters the tenth year since its birth, they mark the occasion with a world tour of epic proportions featuring some of its most colourful characters and a release illustrating why its become one of the most influential brands in the electronic music world. The three-disc compilation, Rebel Rave 3 is an aural mural of the label’s history, the first 2 discs examining the best of 2012’s releases and the final disc stitched together by Wunderkind Subb-an, a favourite in the Rebels camp (he also heads up One Records) who delves into the label’s most treasured moments of the past decade.
Still at the forefront of future-moving dance music, in 2013 Crosstown Rebels will prove why they have remained the electronic pioneering force of the past decade as they surpass this landmark moment in style with a world tour that takes in five continents and eighteen countries. As true party lovers, the Rebel’s global events hold legacies in the histories of countless night institutions and this tour promises no less with over twenty-five artists present and counting. Starting in Mexico, before heading to Puerto Rico, Peru, Australia, China, Japan, across America and Europe, the four-month voyage carrying the flagship Rebel Rave events are true indicators of the Rebels spirit.
The label has inspired countless unforgettable dancefloor moments and nurtured many universally revered music makers. Consistently riding high on end of year charts having delivered iconic club records throughout its history – from the timeless Mathew Jonson remix of Hiem’s ‘She’s The One’, to the chart topping ‘Speechless’ from Mish Mash and Miami anthem ‘Summertime’ that launched the career of Jamie Jones. Not forgetting ‘Love Never Sleeps‘ from everyone’s favourite techno maverick Seth Troxler and the epic ‘Without You’ from the unstoppable duo Art Department – the Crosstown Rebels catalogue both induces waves of nostalgia and owns scene-altering moments.
Crosstown Rebels was born in 2003 by the master of discovery, label father Damian Lazarus. Driven by a child-like curiosity, a vivid imagination and wicked sense of humour, he invests boundless energy and enthusiasm into nurturing emerging producers around the world and sharing some of the most exciting and experimental music on the planet, leading to Crosstown Rebels being crowned no.1 label of 2011 by electronic bible Resident Advisor.
Jamie Jones delivered both his artist albums for the label and launched the Welsh house hero into the outer stratosphere. The first album on the imprint introduced the Chilean maestro, Pier Bucci and Maceo Plex, Art Department and Deniz Kurtel all brought their debut album releases to Crosstown Rebels in 2011 and more recently unheard debuts from Iranian/Canadian musician & vocalist Amirali and South American duo Fur Coat proved the Rebel state remains a thriving hotbed for influential talent. Looking to 2013 and their decade year, Infinity Ink, Subb-an and Ali Love’s latest solo project plus brand new DJ, producer and vocalist Francesca Lombardo will be breaking their projects on the label alongside follow up albums from Maceo Plex and Art Department, so set to be another heavyweight chapter.
Crosstown Rebels isn’t only synonymous with music. It’s unique and exquisitely produced film series Rebel Rave TV launched in 2009 in collaboration with the highly skilled film-maker David Terranova (http://blog.davidterranova.com/) . The Rebel Rave series has documented Rebel antics on an extensive global tour crossing the USA and Europe and the series is a consistent source of creative and cultural inspiration. At the tail end of 2012, in an ongoing quest to party outside the box, Lazarus formed a new festival project, Day Zero. A party for the new order taking events out of the usual club environment and into unusual spaces set to coincide with the end of the Mayan calendar at a pyramid site in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. His podcast series, Lazpod continues to be a source of inspiration and an excursion into weird and wonderful sounds, often straying way beyond the dancefloor.
One thing however is for certain: a consistently innovative and timeless legacy has been left deeply imbedded within the electronic music scene by Crosstown Rebels and long may the forward thinking continue.
