REVIEW: Leon Bolier @ Beta Nightclub 23-03-13 by Monika Sobota

EDM TOR took a trip to Waterloo, ON Saturday March 23rd to see Leon Bolier, one of the most talented Producer/DJs in Electronic Dance Music, make his debut at Beta Nightclub. We arrived at Beta at around 11:30pm and the club was already pretty busy, with lots of people buzzing with excitement. The energy was noticeably high and the atmosphere was incredible. It was my first time at this venue so I took in the cool effects that were around the entire club, like the lights in the middle of the dance floor that moved up and down, and the amazing LED displays on the wall and around the DJ booth. It was very clear to me to see why so many other DJ’s like Steve Angello, Avicii and more have loved playing inside Beta. I was actually very shocked that ticket prices for this show were so incredibly low in comparison to other venues ($5!), not that it was a bad thing by any means. When we had settled into the club and began dancing, the night was well underway with local talent DJ Dijon on the decks warming the crowd up with really great, high energy tracks varying from electro, tech trance, minimal and progressive. I was really excited to see Leon Bolier for the first time and many people around me were equally as excited to see him for their first time as well; some who weren’t too familiar with him were looking forward to see what he had in store for us.

For those who may not be too familiar with him, Leon Bolier is a DJ/Producer born in the Netherlands where he currently resides. Signed under Spinnin’ Records label, he has been actively mixing and producing since 2003 but his career took off in 2008 with a number of successful song releases including the hit track Ocean Drive Boulevard.  He is known as one of the most creative studio minds for his variety of work. Widely known to play ‘trance with a twist’, Leon keeps it interesting with tracks in different genres. He has appeared on famous trance compilations such as Tiesto’s ‘In Search of Sunrise 4: Latin America’ and Armin Van Buuren’s ‘A State of Trance 2006’. 2012 was a pivotal year for Leon where we saw track releases such as You, Us, and Trumpets which was collaborated with Alex Kenji. Leon is set to release his newest track Disco Davai on April 5th, 2013 and it is already being played in sets around the world, with proof that 2013 is going to be a very successful year for him. Leon also hosts a radio show called Streamlined Radio on Afterhours FM that is available to download as a podcast as well for the fans who love to stay connected as much as possible.

Eagerly waiting for Leon to begin his set, the small town of Waterloo known for its University and party scene had no idea what was about to hit their ears. By the time Bolier was ready to come on just before 12:30am Beta was insanely packed and incredibly hot. With a huge welcome from the crowd Leon started the night off with a great track – Daddy Groove’s Stellar, and with no mercy shown he continued to give everyone unparalleled energy for the remainder of the night. He played many of his own tracks throughout the set including You, Me, Us, and his brand new track Disco Davai which sounded absolutely incredible live. Bolier dropped his 2012 hit collaboration Trumpets and proved track after track why he is one of the hottest DJs in Electronic Dance Music. Later on in the night I was beyond pumped to hear Leon play an out of this world mashup Vengeance Vengeance Sun & Moon by Leon himself and Samuel L. Jackson vs. Above & Beyond. Paying homage to many other great producers, we were fortunate enough to hear bomb after bomb being dropped for just over two hours with an assortment of track selections ranging from electro, tech trance, trance and progressive. Bolier made sure we used up every ounce of energy and threw down W&W and Marcel Woods’ track Trigger that made the crowd go wild, followed by Tiesto’s Maximal Crazy and completed the set with Showtek and Justin Prime’s massive banger Cannonball, ending the night with just as much energy and power as he had started with. Everyone applauded the amazing set and begged Leon for more before leaving entirely satisfied and impressed beyond words.

Overall this was a very successful and amazing event at Beta Nightclub and all the awesome fans that came to dance their hearts out with us could surely attest to how great of a night it was. A very big thank you goes to Andrew Kim and Beta Waterloo for putting together an unforgettable event. Make sure you get in contact with Andrew (Facebook) the next time you want to attend an Envy Productions party at Beta – you will not be disappointed! To Leon Bolier, thank you so much for the mind blowing set, please come back soon!!
