REVIEW: Super8 & Tab @ The Guvernment 20-04-13 by Monika Sobota

Saturday April 20th 2013 was host to another famous Spin Saturday event inside The Guvernment main room with Finnish trance duo, Super8 & Tab,  otherwise known as Miika (Super8) and Janne (Tab).  This was a highly anticipated return after their last visit to The Guvernment for the massive VIVA party back in November 2012. Producing tracks together since 2005 and an integral part of Anjunabeats family, this duo is no stranger to the trance scene.  Coming off of a successful year in 2012 with hits like Fiesta, Awakenings and Black is Back, 2013 is off to a great start with new track releases Teardrops, L.A., and a new track set to release called Your Secret’s Safe featuring Julie Thompson. One of the most influential trance acts of the past decade, the Finnish duo has been super hot already this year with massive shows in Armin’s A State of Trance 600: The Expedition Tour, in Kuala Lampur and in Miami during the Ultra Music Festival. With live worldwide broadcasts of the shows we got to listen in and hear how incredible Super8 & Tab were with each performance, and gain excitement for what was waiting for us here on April 20th.

Arriving at The Guvernment just before midnight with almost the entire Toronto Trance Family and friends in attendance, the atmosphere was already buzzing. Everyone was beyond excited to hear Super8 & Tab play especially after their set in November which was amazing but with only an hour and a half… way too short. On this magical night we were promised a three hour set which would be more than enough time to blow us all away and show us what Super8 & Tab is really made of. Upon arrival the talented resident DJs Manzone & Strong were warming up the crowd and as usual doing a phenomenal job of playing the proper tracks to match the vibes of the increasingly growing crowd. Knowing what a typical Spin Saturday event is like, I knew it would be pretty packed inside the main room so there was no surprise when we arrived and it was already as busy as it was. This was a monumental night for the Toronto Trance Family as it was also the official launch of the campaign to bring Armin van Buuren’s A State of Trance 650 to Toronto. The campaign team was displaying their red ASOT650TO shirts and even garnered support from Super8 & Tab who took one of the red shirts and waved it over their heads to the crowd. Later in the night the duo also raised the Toronto Trance Family flag for all to see.

Shortly after 1:00am the set began with Super8 & Tab playing their latest hit L.A. and the tone was set with the sounds of Anjunabeats all night long. We heard several Above & Beyond tracks including Walter White, Black Room Boy, Can’t Sleep and a massive crowd favourite, Alchemy. They lifted us off our feet and took us soaring through the clouds with Rank 1’s Airwave and dropped us into a full on rage during the breakdown of Emma Hewitt’s Rewind (Mikkas Remix). One of the greatest memories of the night was when Super8 & Tab played their mash up of a beautiful creation called Awakening Satellite (Super8 & Tab vs. Oceanlab). The entire crowd was singing along and everyone was hugging each other and truly experiencing the beauty of that very moment. To speak about it gives it absolutely no justice – it was one of those moments that you truly had to be there for to understand how incredible it really was. Miika and Janne’s energy was matched by a crowd that loved every single second of what they had to bring. Their ability to blend heavy big room bangers with melodic and uplifting Trance separates them greatly from many other big names in Trance. Super8 & Tab took the crowd on an emotional roller coaster ride full of ups and downs taking you on that journey that you seek with every show. It proves heavily why they are consistently among the Top favourite DJs worldwide and why everyone will remember this night for a very long time.

As someone who loves Trance more than any other genre, being able to witness this show live makes me feel so privileged to have been there, because it was truly a one-of-a-kind night. If you decided not to attend this event then I can only say next time make sure you don’t miss it because even Super8 & Tab themselves could tell you, when they tweeted about the show the day after, just how amazing the night was in its entirety.

“It went from crazy to absolutely mad last night. 3 hours felt like 3 minutes and it all can be said with 3 words: We Love Toronto!!” – Super8 & Tab

A big thank you to INK Events for hosting yet another really successful Spin Saturday and to The Guvernment for helping us maintain such an incredible atmosphere. I’m sure everyone can agree that we can’t wait for the next Trance event to make its way to The Guvernment very soon.
