1. Jounce, it’s a pleasure to have you! Now, let’s get started! You just released your official music video for your track Vs. Doppelganger this month. Can you tell us what the story line is about?

Yeah, thanks for having me! Vs. Doppelganger is about an internal struggle for self-balance. It’s about your positive qualities wrestling with your negative attributes. Being confident while dealing with your fears and insecurities. Finding hope and staying strong when all you feel is despair and weakness. The video is a little dark and twisted, but I think we’ve all had moments where we can relate. It’s on my YouTube.com/djJounce … so check it out … but wait ’til after this interview is done.

2. We love a good podcast at EDM Toronto. Tell us about your Mix Episode, and what we can expect?

Every hour-long episode features something new that I’m releasing for the 1st time. It could be an original, remix, mash-up or whatever. I’ve been doing it once a month on my SoundCloud and just started publishing on djJounce.podomatic.com. It’s a great way for me to say a few words to my fans and share my latest music on a regular basis. If anyone has any requests, please let me know. I always love to hear from EDM lovers. I just released my latest episode, which is a special edition from my set from iEnlive’s digitial music festival Live The Mix, which aired December 12 on Mixify.

3. This summer you played at PACHA, Amnesia, and the PUKKA Up boat parties in Ibiza. What was this experience like for you? Is the island as magical as they say?

Ibiza was an incredible experience. It’s like Ultra or EDC transported to an island and dropped the different stages inside all these nightclubs and onto boats. And it goes on everyday all summer long. So I guess you can say it’s a magical little EDM paradise. To have been part of that was unforgettable and I can’t wait to go back. Shout out to everyone at Pukka Up and Rockwell Noize!

4. Tell us about your 3-week Asia tour you did in early 2013. What were the highlights?

I DJd in Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam. For me, the highlights weren’t so much about specific events. Although the gigs were great, I’d have to say the highlights were just the folks I met. For real. Each country, each city was very hospitable and I still keep in touch with people I met. I can’t wait to see them next year.

5. What’s your story? How and when did you decide that becoming a DJ was for you?

My story is rather bland but here’s the truth. I started out playing instruments early in life. I was a band nerd throughout school. I also played in rock bands and jazz band. Honestly, I didn’t take DJ’ing seriously until one of my DJ friends was hired at a new club and asked if I could DJ with him. Everything took off from there. I still absolutely love live music, but being a DJ does have its benefits – like less equipment to carry on tour.

6. Did you always know you wanted to be a music producer? Or were any other career paths strongly considered?

Music always has and probably always will be my greatest passion. But I didn’t have an opportunity to pursue music until after college. My parents made a lot of sacrifices immigrating to the US and I didn’t want to take a risky career path, especially because my mom was very ill since I was in grade school. I guess that’s part of the reason I don’t take any of my music opportunities for granted. I mean, some people never even get a chance to pursue music.

7. Who were some of the first dance music artists to really grab you?

Ooh, let me think back a little. Starkillers, Fedde Le Grand, Tiesto, Kaskade, and …? Kind of a weird mix, but I’ve always listened to different styles and all genres. I’m sure I’m missing some others.

8. Top 3 Tracks at the moment?

1. Calvin Harris remix of Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat – His new beat on it is just slamming perfect for that track.

2. “Revolution” by R3hab, Nervo and Ummet. I edited it and now call it “The revolution will not be televised” in my mixes.

3. And I’ll shamelessly say one of my new tracks, Get Your Feet Up. We just shot the music video for it with some killer dancers so be on the lookout for that release.

9. Who is the greatest DJ of all time in your opinion and why?
Oh gosh, not an easy choice. Hmm, I can already hear my friends giving me hell, but I’m going to say Tiesto. The dude’s been around forever. He was one of the pioneering mega-DJs who produced tracks and collaborations from the Stone Age that still stand up to today’s super hi-tech production. After all these years he’s remained relevant, I guess because of his non-stop touring and releases. The dude also supports newer DJs more than other veterans seem to do. But the clincher is that, according to legend, he would do 6-hour sets without taking a piss! That’s dedication to your crowd.

10. What’s next for DJ Jounce in 2014?

Well, I’ll definitely be building off of what we started in 2013. So there’ll be more tracks and tours, remixes and mixes, videos and silly pictures of me acting a fool, and also… some big collaborations. We have one in the works with a major singer for my Finding Home track. I can’t say her name (yet), but when it’s released I probably won’t shut up about it. Also, I do want to start incorporating more visualizations with my live shows. I do it where the graphics bounce around in sync with the beat of the music. I just need someone to donate a huge LED screen.
