My fingers are trembling with excitement as I write this preview. It has been several long years since Toronto has been bombarded with the heavy beats of hard dance. For those that are unaware, Yoji (formerly Yoji Biomehanika) will be returning to Toronto to play at the Virgin Mobile Mod Club on Friday, January 25th, 2014.

Yoji is a Japanese hard dance DJ. His wild musical style is only exceeded by his even wilder appearance. He lives to entertain, something that is very apparent when he is behind the decks. He personifies a rock star and brings that energy with him wherever he goes. In the 90’s Yoji took to trance, a developing genre. It was only in the early 2000s that he changed his style to a harder variant of trance. In 2007, Yoji altered his musical style once again and dubbed his new sound “tech dance,” which he describes as “a mix of hard dance and techno characterized by its high beats per minute and offbeat rhythms.” Yoji’s record label Hellhouse Records was a powerhouse label releasing tech dance tracks until 2012. The dieTunes label evolved from Hellhouse and is becoming a force to be reckoned with.

Suffice it to say, this kind of event is a rarity. I’m expecting a throwback to raves as they were characterized a few years ago by very high energy, wild, and tiptoeing the line between crazy and out of control. After catching a glimpse of Yoji’s set at EDC 2013, I was mesmerized. I’ve been interested in seeing him in an intimate, smaller setting ever since. For those who are still on the fence, check out this 30 minute video of Yoji at The Guvernment back in 2009 made by our friend Francis at GrooveENERGY. I’ve watched it about 4 times now. My excitement is palpable. I can’t wait for Friday. I hope to see you all there and experience this spectacle with me.
