EVENT PREVIEW: Above & Beyond at Sound Academy 05-31-14 by Adele Desloges

The last time Above & Beyond were in Toronto, they headlined Day 1 of VELD Electronic Music Festival 2013, and I was there, front-right, with the hugest grin from ear to ear. Their set was phenomenal from start to finish, but their time was far too short! Jono Grant, Tony McGuinness and Paavo Siljamäki are not ones to disappoint fans, so they return, this time to Sound Academy, on Saturday, May 31st, 2014, for some much-needed Group Therapy.

Above & Beyond hail from the UK, and have been creating emotionally moving music since the beginning of this millennium. They are currently revving up for their Group Therapy 100 celebration, which many Toronto fans will be traveling down to New York City to attend. Many fans in Toronto were sad to hear that the 100th episode party was not going to be held locally, but the sadness faded away when the Sound Academy date was announced. Group Therapy is the name of Above & Beyond’s weekly radio show, which airs on Digitally Imported‘s trance channel on Fridays at 2PM EST.  Though Group Therapy Radio is only at it’s 100th episode this year, Above & Beyond have been melting hearts weekly since 2004 when they started Trance Around the World.  They re-branded that show in 2012, and Group Therapy became the new title.

I want to try to express to you that there is really nothing like an Above & Beyond show. The seamless mixing, the countless A&B hits, the motivational and inspirational messages on the big screen, and a thousand of your closest #trancefamily members right beside you. Hearing all the voices singing “..been talking to myself forever, yeah..” and watching everyone’s hands raise up while they sing “I’ll never get over you, you’ll never get over me!”.

At Sound Academy, expect to hear many of their original tracks like Sticky Fingers, On A Good Day, Sun & Moon, and Walter White. Many fans will be hoping to hear tracks from Above & Beyond’s Oceanlab alias, a trance project they do with vocalist Justine Suissa. Personally, I will be hoping for Alchemy, On My Way to Heaven, Love is Not Enough, and Every Little Beat, as those songs are pretty special to me. No matter what they drop, it’s going to be a killer show. Oh, I would also expect a few goosebumps, and possibly even tears of joy.

Check out the new track Sticky Fingers featuring Alex Vargas. Out on May 19th, 2014.

Opening DJ duties will be held by none other than The Guvernment‘s Resident DJ, Mark Oliver.  This man has opened and closed for.. well, honestly, if you can name a headlining DJ he hasn’t opened or closed for, I would be shocked. Find out for yourself why he’s held down the #1 Resident position at Guv since it opened in 1996, come early and listen!  EDM TOR is going to be there to catch all the action for everyone who can’t attend, so don’t worry, you won’t miss a thing.

Tickets are currently SOLD OUT. Sorry, but you’re probably going to have to give up your first born to get one of these highly sought-after tickets. To everyone else who was lucky enough to get theirs, I will see you there, along with our photographer Stephanie Cañarte, who is going to be snapping all the action! Find me for kandi trades, hugs, and to get featured on our Instagram page!
