EVENT REVIEW: Damian Lazarus at Coda 06-21-14 by Lindsay Cabrera

This past Saturday night, I decided to head over to CODA to see the rebel himself – Damian Lazarus. Although it wasn’t my first time, since I’ve been fortunate to see him live at the opening of Verboten in Brooklyn, New York, for his infamous Rebel Rave in March, followed by his annual Get Lost party during Miami Music Week. The night also featured Starving Yet Full, Nitin, Jonathan Rosa and Leo Franco.

When I arrived Jonathan Rosa was on the decks, amping up the crowd with his sexy sounds and infectious basslines, which always gets me going. Near the end of his set, Starving Yet Full gave a live performance along with Rosa – which was an amazing combination of deep house and beautiful, hypnotizing vocals. Starving Yet Full then took over for a series of tracks until Crosstown Rebels boss Damian Lazarus joined on the decks, in which he would then take us all on a dark magical journey for the next 2 hours.

All of a sudden it got real dark inside CODA – the lights were pretty much off with a hint of red light here and there. You literally couldn’t even see the person’s face you were speaking to, but this didn’t matter since we’re all there for the music. The atmosphere changed the second the lights went down and Damian started his set. It seems as though the 2 hours flew by – but Damian really had the crowd’s attention and dropped his newest release Lovers’ Eyes in collaboration with The Ancient Moons (to be released on his label Crosstown Rebels June 30th, 2014).  The vibe was infectious with Damian’s groove – which had everyone dancing.

Lovers’ Eyes is the first release from Lazarus’s new collaborative artist project, which will lead to an album and live tour in early 2015. Ancient Moons brings together a wide assortment of vocalists, collaborators and players, from around the world. Taking inspiration from Lazarus’s Lazpod series, Get Lost events and Day Zero festival in Mexico, this is music for deserts, jungles and sunrises.

Next up – Nitin closed out the night continuing the vibe with his deep sounds, which had everyone dancing till the very end. The No.19 label owner gave the audience a preview of what to expect next weekend at Digital Dreams – where No.19 will host its own stage on Sunday June 29th. The stage will feature My Favorite Robot, Eric Volta, DJ Sneak, Guy Gerber, Green Velvet and Art Department.

If you’ve yet to see Damian Lazarus – add him to your DJ Bucket List, as he is a believer in giving people something exciting, unusual and idiosyncratic. He lives life to the limit, always rebelling, always moving forward.
