Round 1 winners: Girls

All I know is I danced the entire night.

I arrived at Tota Lounge just before midnight. There were already a few patrons sitting at the bar and a crowd on the dance floor. Marco Jay (Jamie Fine and Marco Panzarino) has already taken control of the dance floor. A steady beat was filling the venue as dancers claimed their spots. The temperature was rising as several individuals were already sporting sweaty foreheads from grooving on the dance floor.

Not sure if anyone else has have ever been ID after being in a venue for half an hour but it’s strange. To have someone say “I don’t want to offend you…but can I see your identification?” after you have said your hellos and bought a beverage is pretty outstanding. Thanks for saying I look 18, though!

Just after midnight Mark Beshai, one half of TheNightOwls, took to the decks to start the competition off. Adrian Oblanca Mystery of the Dove, AudiometricsGonna get Ya, and Andy Rojas – Sound Decks were some of the tracks played.  Jeff Webb (the other half) played the boys’ final track of the first round, newly released Ass N’ Tities (Original Mix) by TheNightOwls and MC Flipside, from DBR Recordings. It reminded me heavily of DJ Assault‘s Ass-N-Titties track from 2002.

Cee Dove started the things off at 12:40 a.m. for the ladies. Continuing the theme of shaking what your mama gave ya, the first track the girls played was Mark Knight’s remix of Shake That by Dansson & Marlon Hoffstadt and Keep it OnMelvin and Kelin. From that point on it, the mandate was about keeping the party going.

Not sure if Mark giving me a cupcake was a way to sweeten me up before this review was written, but it would become a disaster later on. Sugar and I don’t mix, as I become a three year-old child bouncing off the walls. An influx of party seekers arrived at Tota Lounge around 1 a.m. I was sad to see my coveted dance space was to be shared by a couple. I can’t be the only one distracted by any sightings of the primal mating dance that was on display in front of me. Let me tell you, I couldn’t help but watch from the corner of my eye the sights in front of  me. I was distracted for a few more  minutes until the beat took over and I was once again bouncing along.

The remainder of the night was a sugar-high blur with Mix Megs dropping GussyMissy E (Jerome Robins Edit) as one of the last songs for the girls. TheNightOwls had one last chance to wow the crowd. Playing a selection of TheNightOwls’ bootlet edits, including Jay Lumen X Craig MackCarpe Diem X Flava in your Ear (TheNightOwls Bootleg Edit) and Guille Placencia X BahamadiaPsychomat X uknowhowwedo (TheNightOwls Bootleg Edit).

Round 2 winners were decided by secret ballot, with both boys and girls winning in a tie. Well deserved for both parties as all DJs kept the high energy up and music flowing all night. More importantly, I danced the entire night and have a revived appreciation for all things tech house. Looks like round 3 will be another exciting night, can’t wait to leave everything on the dance floor again! Girls are up by 1!

If you are looking for an intimate night of house, tech house and disco by talented Toronto locals, be sure to check out the next round! Keep and eye to the Parliament House Facebook page for updated information. Huge thanks to Tota Lounge, Miz Megs, Cee Love and TheNightOwls!
