It’s 12:51 a.m. on a Wednesday and I’ve received three noise complaints in the past hour. I see headlights pulling into my driveway; I peek out and see a police cruiser. Hold on, I don’t want them to here key strokes when they get to the door because I won’t be opening it.

Ok gone, time to pull out my headphones. You might be saying to yourself, “what kind of asshole plays loud music past midnight on a weekday?” Normally I would agree with you, but I can’t be blamed for tonight’s incidents. I blame Lui Maldonado. Who? Yea that was my reaction too, when I received his remix of David Herrero’s All I Do in my inbox. After a quick listen, this new release on Mustache Music had me intrigued. I headed over to Lui’s SoundCloud page, that’s when all hell broke lose.

First I listened to his rework of Pleasurekraft’s Tarantula, then one of Maldonado’s original productions GrandPa, then GrandMa. With each successive track the volume went up a notch, until there were no more notches. One neighbor was banging on my ceiling, another on my floor and finally on my door. Their attempts were futile. I had been possessed by the sounds of Lui Maldonado.

Now that the police are gone, all my neighbor’s have settled down and I’ve got the volume cranking into my headset, it’s time to describe the track that started the chaos. Normally I turn the music off to write, but tonight I can’t stop alternating between the original version of All I Do and Maldonado’s remix. I’m studying all the little tweaks trying to figure out how on earth Lui managed to take an exceptionally rigid baseline and flip it into a sped up set of percussions that wallop even harder. I can picture him in the studio looking like an orchestra conductor as he waves his magic conductor stick stripping away a severely smooth vocal sample because clearly it wasn’t hard enough for what he was trying to create. Maybe this image has been conjured up by learning that this Spanish producer spent eight years composing classical music before making the switch to Tech. In his next stroke of genius at the five-minute mark he strips down an extra sexy set of synth chords so that the finished product will make even the most tone def of listeners bop their heads to the rhythm. What we are left with is a rock solid, classic piece of Tech House that will be heard bumping through the speakers in nightclubs all over the world for years to come.

Listen up producers of Tech, there’s a new guy on the scene, his name is Lui Maldonado, and if you don’t step your game up he’s going to start stealing your lunch money. Everyone who considers themselves a fan of hard hitting, soul clenching house music needs to check out his SoundCloud page and take in the many works of art Lui has bestowed upon us. When your done be sure to check out his Beatport page and BUY his music! Supporting up and coming producers with this much talent is an absolute necessity to the industry’s continued growth. Hopefully after hearing the depth of his rapidly increasing catalogue, North American promoters (starting with the ones here in T.O.) pick up the phone and start booking him into their local venues.
