The Iranian born Ali Shirazinia aka Dubfire grew up in America listening to Hip-Hop, Reggae and Jazz music. So, it may have come as a surprise to some when the then 20-year-old Shirazinia, hooked up with Sharam Tayebi to form Deep Dish, a DJ/producer duo that eventually made a name for themselves in the progressive house genre. Deep Dish gained international notoriety doing remix’s for pop stars such as Madonna, Janet Jackson & Cher before winning a Grammy award for their remix of Dido’s Thank You in 2002. In 2006 the duo separated to focus on their solo careers before reuniting in March of this year.
Deep Dish headlined day one of the third annual Digital Dreams festival in Toronto this summer. It was during this set that I first heard the newest track from Dubfire, Exit featuring Miss Kitten. I was instantly hooked on the nine-minute track that is a perfect example of the more underground sound that Ali has focused on throughout his solo career. “I try to apply a punk ethic to my own music…it has to be groundbreaking, futuristic, unique, and organic.” said Shirazinia who launched his own record label Science + Technology Digital Audio, better known as SCI + TEC in 2007. With releases such as Emissions, RibCage & Roadkill, Dubfire used 2007 to cement his reputation as a top-notch producer.
