TRACK REVIEW: Atoosa – Spirit by Jeet Ghoshal

Today I indulge myself in yet another home grown trance talent. Atoosa, hailing from right here in Toronto, is well versed in musical knowledge, having been educated at the prestigious Royal Conservatory of Music since she was 8 years old. She later took her musical prowess to New York where she studied electronic music at Dubspot.

One of the reasons my love for Trance music burns so bright is because of how many similarities it shares with classical music—the layering of different sounds, the emotions it can evoke, and synchronous harmony that is evident in every chord, note and beat. So, when I find a producer that shares this viewpoint and incorporates it into their music, I dive deep and try and listen to as much as I can from them.

The classical influence is very apparent in Atoosa’s track aptly titled, Spirit. It opens with a slightly abrasive synthetic sound with an echoed clap defining each 4 bar phrase. The deep, pounding bass line kicks in and immediately illuminates a darker character to the track—something similar to a Markus Schulz, or Markus Schulz presents Dakota track. Slowly, more layers are added, the bass line is offset every so often to create depth to the introduction. Slowly, the melody pokes it head through. More synthetic sounds are added followed by more echo effects. Then, at approximately 1:40, the bass line cuts out and makes way for the melody.

A slow, soothing, eerily simple piano solo takes center stage. The richness of the melody is accentuated by an offsetting electronic synth that both mirrors and contrasts the piano. This contrast builds in strength in the next 4 bar segment as the song continues to build to its eventual peak. The slight differences and deviations that echo throughout the song create that intricate texture synonymous with trance music. The peak of the song is at 3:50. It lasts about one minute and thirty seconds and combines all the previous elements of the song into a masterful harmony. The outro slowly reduces the song from its most energetic to its simplest form, mirroring the intro until it fades to silence.

All in all, Spirit is a wonderfully dark, melodic track and, Atoosa being the kind soul she is, it is FREE for you to download today. If you enjoy Atoosa’s stylings, be sure to check her out via her many social media platforms found below.
