EVENT PREVIEW: TBC Presents LOW FREQUENCY October 2014 by Keanu Jones

October’s edition of LOW FREQUENCY hosted by Toronto Bass Community is set to be a veritable smorgasbord of genres blasting through the speakers at Toika Lounge. This month we have four new local acts coming to say hello as well as one more well known duo coming to bless us with Bass. The line-up for the night consists of Arts&Crafts (Hamilton), AFTR HRS (Whitby), Charlie Zane (Markham), Maddi Qwikstepp (Toronto) & last but not least Dr.Ozi (Brampton). We’ll be rockin all night to House, Electro and Melbourne Bounce all the way to the other end of the spectrum where we have Moombahton, Drum and Bass, Trap and Dubstep. From what I can see my very first Low Frequency night is going to be a very good one.

Arts&Crafts a.k.a Alex Coombs is a 25 year old DJ coming out of Hamilton who specializes in spinning Moombahton, Trap & Hip-Hop. She seems to be interested in everything artist as she owns her own photography company and is a professor at Mohawk College teaching animation & graphic design. Check out her SoundCloud if you want to get more acquainted with her style of mixing.

AFTR HRS a.k.a Calum Stewart is a 22 year old DJ/Producer out of Whitby who mostly spins House, Electro, Melbourne, Trap & Dubstep. His original productions & mash-ups clearly reflect his choice in set material and he does a good job of keeping everything clean cut & high energy. I like his remix of The Munsta’s SCNDL, give it and his other production a go while you’re on his SoundCloud and stop by his Mixcloud page to see what his mixing style is like.

Charlie Zane a.k.a Carlo Zeni is a 24 year old DJ/Producer from Markham who had been spinning for almost a decade. He feels most comfortable playing Deep, Tech House, Electro, Dubstep and Drum and Bass. He is like quicksilver in my opinion, his remixes take form in every genre so essentially he is formless. Take a trip over to his SoundCloud & Mixcloud, they are definitely worth the visit and you will see what I mean.

Maddi Qwikstepp a.k.a Lady Qwickstepp is a 22 year old DJ born and raised in Toronto. She also has been spinning for the better part of a decade and she focuses on Breakbeat, Techno, Garage and Booty House. I’m pleased to announce that she happens to be the only one on the bill who actively spins vinyl and her SoundCloud resonates with that part of my soul that wishes to be a breakdancer. Her “Get To Steppin” mixes are nothing to sneeze at either and are well worth the listen.

Last up on the bill we have Dr.Ozi a DJ/Production duo consisting of Nix Chohan and Christian Boyd from Brampton. They have been getting a lot of buzz since the beginning of the decade having released songs on Buygore Records, Heavy Artillery, Firepower and Audiophile. Their songs and remixes have garnered the attention of acts like Destroid, Downlink & Borgore. Their style has evolved over the years and they are liable to play anything that feels good, but usually they stick to Dubstep, Electro, and what can only be described as bass music. These guys are most definitely soon-to-be superstars and im glad that we can see them strut their stuff alongside other great local acts

All of this takes place at Toika Lounge starting at 10 p.m. sharp. Tickets are available at the door for $5 when you present a valid Student ID (before 11:30 p.m.), $10 otherwise. This night will be hosted as always by Toronto Bass Community.
