EVENT REVIEW: LOW FREQUENCY 22-10-14 by Keanu Jones

Last week’s edition of LOW FREQUENCY Wednesdays at Toika was a really cool affair. It was my first time being at Toika so I brought a friend who had already been there before. The space was a little small but still pretty neat with the DJ booth being so close to the floor and some seats to the right. I arrived at the venue at about 11 p.m, just in time to see Arts&Crafts start her set. There were not many people there yet, but, I knew that those in attendance were people from the usual Toronto Bass Community (TBC) crew. I’m a big fan of Moombahton and Arts&Crafts weaved some awesome tracks into her set, along with some choice House tracks and a bunch of Trap. She was really confident in her skills and she laid out a tracklist that was really good in retrospect. She surprised me by dropping Valentino Khan’s remix of Bird Brain by Bro Safari & UFO near the end of her set. I love this track and was actually listening to it on my way to the event.

Next up was Maddi Qwikkstepp who opened up on a strong note with an Electro banger that got me into the shuffling mood. More people had arrived by now and they seemed to be all feeling the same thing. Her set was really varied and she put together some good tunes, so it was not hard to dance at all. I was starting to see the appeal of coming out to these Low Frequency nights. All who were in attendance were nice people and really easy to talk to.

Then at about 1 a.m. Dr.Ozi hit the stage. This was the set that I really came to see, because I know Ozi always has some wicked tunes in their arsenal. The opened up with their remix of Childish Gambino’s The Party and everyone was collectively skanking at the same time. It was great to see everyone catch the same vibe. They kept on with the heavy bass and I was loving every minute of it. These guys were in sync and having a good time together behind the decks while they dropped a bunch of their own songs in the mix. After about 25 minutes, I realized that this is was the best possible Low Frequency show for me to have attended for my first time. I love checking out local acts and there was an artist on the bill that I knew and had been dying to see for a while.

Unfortunately, I had to leave halfway through Dr. Ozi’s to catch my ride home but I heard that AFTR HRS and Charlie Zane both killed their sets as well with a bunch of Drum and Bass and Dubstep to keep the dance floor full until close.
