“I haven’t got a clue what’s going on.”

After a crazy week full week of assignments, I was looking forward to Focus Friday at The Hoxton with Rusko, Patrick Reza and local talent, Hydee, Pusher and TipsyTom. Congratulations, TipsyTom on winning the Toronto Bass Community Wavo.me contest! And shout out to all the artists who submitted mixes, you all are super talented.

I arrived at The Hoxton around 10:30 p.m. I can tell a lot about how my night is going to turn out by the vibes I get when walking into a venue. Right off the bat, a random girl was walking out the venue, assisted by two friends. Everyone who saw the trio pass by was thinking the same thing “wow, it’s still early.” A few people may have said it out loud. I hope you got home safely! I, for one, knew the night would turn around and would to new adventures. Boy, was I right.

I immediately put my coat in coat check and made my way front and centre. TipsyTom was setting the vibes for the night. There was already a crowd formed, bouncing to a mix of Deep Dupstep. As soon as I arrived in front of the subs, Chase & StatusSaxon was blasting through the speakers. The moment was surreal: feeling the bass pump through your soul while grooving to one of your favourite tracks a proper system. You could not ask for a better place to be.

Just after 11 p.m. Pusher took to the decks. The volume was turned up as the venue began to fill more and more as Pusher took us deeper into the night. I missed the majority of Pusher’s short set (only 45 minutes) as I was catching up with friends, Toronto Bass Community and fellow EDM TOR contributors Alix and Richard. It became harder and harder to carve out dance room as Pusher’s set progressed. We found some much needed space and dance room on the elevated platform stage left. Thanks to TBC for letting us dance with you all night!

If you haven’t already checked out Pusher’s track with Rusko, you can listen to “I Wanna Mingle” off Rusko’s “! Vol. 2” album. Also be sure to check out his entire, and all the artists, SoundCloud page, links below.

Just before midnight PatrickReza took to the decks to a chorus of cheers. Several times he told the crowd “wow Toronto, you all are beautiful” which only caused more people to dance harder. Playing a mix of his own remixes and productions including Justice‘s D.A.N.C.E, Take Me Away with Jilian as well as Nero‘s Satisfy, Skrillex, Kill the Noise and Milo & Otis Remix of NRG, and remix of Keys n Krates; All the Time. Also played was Patrick’s new collaboration with T-Mass called Faith. I hope PatrickReza makes it back to Toronto in the very near future, as his set kept me dancing from beginning to send. It seemed like more and more people were entering the venue as I took a few moments to scope out the dance floor. As far as the eye could see, there were bobbing bodies bobbing up and down. It was a mission to traverse the sea of bodies to get a quick breathe of fresh air.

I arrived back just after the man of the hour was behind the decks. Rusko‘s set started with Drum & Bass, and the sound continued during the majority of his set. This was something I and many others had been waiting for. As with previous shows as soon as Rusko started, you would be hard pressed to keep up with him and his ball of energy. It’s very easy to say I was sweaty. It was also a pleasure to see Rusko scratch on some CDJ’s like he was participating in a scratch competition.

There were flying feet everywhere, myself included, as everyone was getting down and dirty. Somebody to Love (Sigma Remix) along with a whole slew of DnB tracks including Dub Phizix and Skeptical featuring Strategy‘s Marka and TC‘s Where’s My Money (VIP) graced our ears. I was itching to hear Hold On (Original), as I am every time I see Rusko. Christopher and I must have been on the same wavelength as the opening chords to Hold On began playing. Just after the chorus Sub Focus‘ remix was mixed in and I left everything on the floor.

I thought I was hearing things as DMX‘s Party Up (In Here) could be heard creeping long the Sub Focus remix, but my ears were correct. The Hoxton went crazy as the chorus played in it’s entirety. I was ready to call it quits, but the mood was infectious. Just before 2 a.m. the opening lines to Cockey Thug were pouring through the speakers. “When your spirit is floating down that tunnel towards the light, you know what’s behind the light? It’s not God, it’s me. And I’m gonna kick your poncy soul all the way back down the tunnel till you choke on your own fucked up ribs. NOW, WAKE THE FUCK UP!,” was shouted at a defining volume. Caspa‘s remix soon followed.

I didn’t care what happened after that as most of my favourite Rusko classics were played including Woo Boost and Everyday. Hydee closed the night, kicking off with some Drum and Bass, much to the delight of the crowd who still wanted more. I took this time say goodnight and continue on my night’s adventures. Thanks to Embrace for a solid booking!
