EVENT REVIEW: Projek: ANDY C @ Guvernment 11-28-14 by Serafina Thoma

I’m not going to lie, I was extremely disappointed when I learned on Facebook just two days before the big event, that Destiny announced Andy C’s final Toronto show under the Guvernment roof was moved from Kool Haus to the Guv’s main room. This show was demanded by the fans and for the fans, so the outrage was very real in regards to strong feelings against the Guv’s sound system and lack of room. People from all over the Greater Toronto Area came to “rinse” and let loose, and we wanted the room to do so without making our ears bleed.

With all that being said, I arrived late travelling from Hamilton, waited in the long line wrapped around the building in the freezing cold. I knew the wait was well worth it.

I got inside the venue soon after Andy C started, and the place looked like a jungle full of bass hungry animals grooving to whatever the King of Drum & Bass would throw down from his throne. I guess you could say that after seeing a couple Drum & Bass shows that were ruined by terrible MCs, it was such a drastic contrast compared to what was experienced at Guv that evening.  Armanni Reign was on point the entire set, extremely in tune with Andy C, like he could read his mind and made cues look invisible. His energy was contagious.

Andy C played Deadmau5’s new single Aravitia (Dimension Bootleg) and it was almost traumatizing for the crowd to handle. The track sounded like a new song altogether, and kept the set very fresh.  At one point in the night, we also heard a DnB remix of Nero’s track Satisfy, which Andy C teased us with and made it more intense than it is on its own. I never thought that song could get any better until that night.

At the end of Andy C’s set, towards 3am, he played a DnB remix of Major Lazer’s track Get Free, which even had Armanni Reign get really emotional. He looked like he was going to cry at one point and it made everyone sad that the set was coming to an end. Andy C came to the front of the stage with his crew and said a thank you speech to his fans, acknowledging his love for Toronto and The Guvernment! It was an emotional moment for everyone.

Local Toronto DJ Hydee followed Andy C very well. Although lots of people left after the Executioner finished his set, it allowed more room for the Bassheads to keep dancing til the lights came on, and Hydee was the perfect guy for the job. The beautiful thing about Drum & Bass is it’s so upbeat that it keeps you moving no matter how tired you are. But Hydee has a way of mixing DnB so that you forget you were tired in the first place!

Guv wasn’t disgustingly packed like we had expected. The upstairs area was opened up for compensation, and there was lots of space to groove in Acid Lounge, which is greatly located by the bathrooms and a bar for those who hate crowds but love to dance. I’ll always have Andy C to thank for changing my mind about the Guv Main room, and for giving me my first positive experience there after many negative ones.
