EVENT REVIEW: The After Party with Surprise Guests Skrillex, Tchami & Hunter Siegel @ Hoxton 12-27-14

Embrace graced us with another killer event at Toronto’s Hoxton Saturdays this past weekend with support from Loud Luxury, Mavro, and Pulp Funktion.

I arrived around 11 p.m. to catch Loud Luxury play some deep house and get the crowd pumped. Their taste sounds very Oliver Heldens inspired, but more Jungle-y and earthy at times. The retro vibes in the Hoxton were felt from front to back the entire set. I slowly made my way to the front and thoroughly enjoyed the music from there.  The luxury duo was very interactive with the crowd, and it only fed the energy even more.

Around 12:30 a.m. Hunter Siegel and Tchami took to the stage for a surprise back-to-back set! Tchami opened with his latest remix released a few months ago Pushin’ On by Oliver $ & Jimi Jules. Both Siegel and Tchami seemed to know what the crowd wanted and when they wanted it; not a single track disappointed. It was almost nostalgic to hear Zeds Dead’s track Lost You (Feat. Twin Shadow & D’Angelo Lacy) which I had just heard live the week before at their Kool Haus show, with the common denominator being Hunter Siegel. Everywhere this guy goes lately, he’s been killing it and playing with the best of the best. He was in sync with Tchami the entire time.

They also played Fuck That by Skrillex which seemed to be a bit foreshadowing at the time, little did we know. But I really enjoyed hearing Feel the Volume by Jauz in their set, because that track is very future house and it set the crowd right off.

Around 2 a.m. it was announced that Skrillex was in the house. The crowd got a little pushy at this point, but you could tell it was more packed than ever and everyone was eager to see it with their own eyes. Anyone arriving from Solaris for their after party had pretty much shown up at this point. I wandered my way to the back of the venue and found shufflers grooving in the back and getting lost in the music. It’s always fun to see all the different groups of people and how they go about giving into the music.

Skrillex came on around 2:45 a.m. and made his love for Toronto known. He played his collaborated remix with Trollphace of Yogi’s track Burial, with heaviness that had me wondering how the entire city wasn’t shaking with bass. He also dropped I Can’t Stop by Flux Pavillion, Get Low by Dillon Francis & DJ Snake, and closed with a mashup of Get Free by Major Lazer and his remix of Cinema by Benny Benassi. Skrillex played until McDonalds started serving breakfast, and it was evident that Toronto would have kept dancing until the sun came up if Sonny Moore kept spinning.

The entire evening was a blast, and for $25? How could you go wrong. A lot of people new to the scene were upset about the lack of announcement of Skrillex’s surprise set, but anyone who knows the Toronto scene well enough would have been able to predict it. After Steve Aoki was announced for his Solaris after party at The Guvernment, and with all those top 40 mainstream kids being steered in one direction, it was pretty obvious Skrillex was headed elsewhere for the bassheads. Record goes to show Skrilly loves the Hoxton, since he’s played there many times before and will no doubt return again.
