TRACK REVIEW: Tomac ft. Lokka Vox – Black Moon

Alexandre Nadeau, better known as Tomac, is a Canadian DJ and producer. Nadeau started out listening to the ever so popular euro dance in the 90’s, and as his musical tastes developed, he landed on trance as his genre of choice in the late 90’s. His background in piano served as a foundation to assist him in sharing his passion of electronic music with others. After honing his skills, he made his DJ debut in 2006 and in 2010 solidified his residency at Circus Afterhours in Montreal, Canada. Shortly thereafter, he was signed by Armada Music for his production, Good Karma, which was later featured on Roger Shah’s Magic Island compilation.

Black Moon opens with a dark melody characteristic of Armada layered under the euphoric vocals of Lokka Vox; creating a beautiful juxtaposition of euphoric, uplifting vocals and deep, dark, driving trance. The main focus of this song is the vocals of Lokka Vox as the melodies and sound support her voice, but never take center stage. The vocals carry throughout the entire track as opposed to just appearing during the chorus like many other vocal trance songs. The song takes a break from the vocals as it slowly builds and crescendos from 2:30 to 3:00, when the luscious vocals are reintroduced as another layer to create that euphoric, hands in the air, eyes closed feeling that trance is known for. Instead of creating different layers to build to the same melody, portions of track are taken from the beginning and over emphasized as the high energy bass with speckles of masterfully chosen, playful synths add an element of depth to the higher frequencies in the track.

The track itself reminds you of something from Ronski Speed, dark, but euphoric, driving, but melodic. Overall, Black Moon hits every point on the check list that would constitute a great trance track—perfect for the middle of the set, where driving bass lines and energy are key to sustaining the crowd’s enthusiasm. If you purchase the tune, an extended version is available which would be perfect so listeners can hear the development and growth of the track from seemingly nothing, to a plethora of layers and vocals that define the track.
