EP REVIEW: John Dopping’s “Words In Colour Rephrased Vol. 1”

0

Listening to electronic music day in and day out, I  sometimes find it hard to find fresh sounds. This is not to say that electronic music doesn’t excite me anymore — simply that my tastes have been craving something different. No one wants to listen to a broken record – or a continually skipping record; it’s difficult to find artists and compilations that push the boundaries. Stepping into a rare spotlight is John Dopping, consistently delivering excitement every time I come across his name. His “Words In Colour” album is a great example of the fresh sounds John always has to offer. The latest EP of remixes coined, “Words In Colour Rephrased Volume 1,” is no exception; it has me at the edge of my seat wanting more.

The DeCode remix of Malady is a very interesting twist on the original, which has a very blissful and lounge-like feel to it. Decode takes the track deeper with the remix and adds numerous tribal elements to it, creating a hypnotic track that is spacious and magically gravitates you in.

The original track Chayote by John Dopping featuring Activa is dripping with psytrance goodness. The remix by Chris Voro retains all the psytrance elements and includes the addition of his own spin to the track. Chris brings in a lighter sound with a very catchy melody. The new breakdown is very effective and adds great contrast to the track.

The Alan Ruddick remix of Where Do I Begin is a very exciting re-amp of the original track that adds in more psychedelic elements. The overall impression is deeper and darker, made apparent by the voice sample placed effectively in the track.

The EP is released by Research & Development Records, and labeled as the first EP of remixes. I am excited for the next installment of releases!
