EVENT PREVIEW: Pixelcorn Productions, Last Planet & The Deep End present: Shadow Play @ Roncy Hotel – 07-10-2016

This Friday, on October 7th, 2016, three of Ontario’s finest EDM production companies will join forces to throw one of the most surreal parties you will see this fall. Pixelcorn Productions, Last Planet and The Deep End are combining their efforts into an event they’re calling Shadow Play. Their aim is to transform The Roncey Hotel, located at 1521 Queen Street West into “a dark forest of sinister creatures and beautiful creations”.

Expect the space to be filled with theme-specific decor on a scale not normally seen, thanks to the use of projections, lighting effects, and large handmade illustrations made specifically for this event. Thadea Decora, one of Pixelcorn’s founders, cites “experience design theory” as a driving force for conceptualizing and shaping the event’s atmosphere, in terms of being able to “engage as many of the senses as you can; sight, smell, touch, sound.”

Along with the stunning decor, the team is bringing in a custom-manufactured “Iron Lung Soundsystem” that is sure to put you in touch with the beat. In fact, the system is so powerful that the event was relocated on its account. Due to existing noise complaints filed for previous events at the initally-designated venue, in order to hold Shadow Play there, the system would have had to be severely limited – specifically, no bass. With only a week before the premier, a decision was made to change locales in order to preserve the sound purity – “we cannot have a legend like Youngsta playing on a muzzled system with no bass”.

Here to take full advantage of this spectacular “Iron Lung Soundsystem” will be some sheer talent that is sure to push the bass levels into the stratosphere!

Youngsta is a UK based DJ, who’s been at the helm of Dubstep since its beginnings. This artist is being flown in and is set to headline for the night. In recent years, Youngsta has been a host for London, England’s very own Rinse 106.8FM where you can catch him between 9PM & 11PM on Tuesday nights (Greenwich Mean Time).

Heading off the rest of the lineup for the night is Stranjah. This is a veteran of Toronto’s nightlife scene. After spinning for 15 years he is still pumping out House, Hip Hop, and Bass tracks and is sure to keep the party going even after the night starts to get darker.

Freeza Chin is a Toronto-based Radio DJ who broadcasts live every Tuesday on www.nasty.fm from 1PM to 3PM (EST). Freeza is known to spin some dirty, grimey beats which are more than enough to get your cogs all gummed up. Freeza can also be caught spinning at Thymeless (355 College St) once a month, throwing 100% Reggae and Dancehall beats all night long.

Despite them running the distance of Lake Ontario, the members (Phil Shore & Josh Bates) making up Distinct Motive joined forces in 2012. This Deep Dub duo is going to shake the house down when they get on stage. They bring with them the experience that has “turned the heads of some of the major players in the Dubstep scene”.

Ryan Pim, better known as DJ Ghaleon, is no stranger to the dark forces that’ll be converging on the Roncy Hotel this Friday night! Performing his own distinct Jungle music, which he prefixes “atmospheric”, he is sure to bring the house down once it starts rocking.

A visitor to Toronto from London, Ontario, Skengman (aka Divonne Hamilton) is set to deliver a unique blend of UK Garage tracks. These beats will make you remember that you’re still partying in a Commonwealth country. As far as musical imperialism goes, this really takes the Queen’s cake; go ahead and get wild for this card – special compliments of The Deep End. You’re welcome.

Another Deep End resident from London, Ontario; Leo Dank, travels to our fair city to bring a glimpse of his West Ontario UK Garage tracks, right here in Toronto – and he wants to make you really feel the beat. From Leo, you can expect the high tops to be sneakily pushed to the limits while your still only focusing on the bass. Best to expect your knees to weaken.

Tim Shannon (AKA Tim Shenanigans: co-founder of Pixelcorn) is a rising star in the EDM scene, but don’t let his moniker fool you, this guy means business! When it comes to delivering the “killing bass blow”, Tim is the one you hand the gun to, trusting in the absolute certainty that he’ll hit a bullseye every time. Having recently played at Coda on Sept 30th – and also in early July – Tim also performed this summer at Labyrinth’s Wild Festival. Having cut his musical teeth at Toronto hotspots like Baseline and The Central before mainlining into the greater Toronto nightlife, be sure to check him out before he hits the headlines!

If you’re looking for a way to kick off the halloween season, this event is definitely going to set the bar high for whatever the rest of the month has to offer. Come dressed in your best Rocky Horror drag or spooky haunted get-up and dance until your skeleton runs away. Tickets are $20 in advance and $30 at the door. Only 50 spots will be reserved for the door so buy yours here ahead of time!
